Cultural Cocktails

Being from Wisconsin, we know a thing or two about the importance of adult beverages to our culture. Wisconsin without beer would be like peanut butter without jelly, mexico without tequilla, basically the world would not be right. To commemorate how a drink can play into a culture we would like to introduce you to Caipirinha.

Caipirinha is made with cachaca sugar, which is a hard liquor, sugar and lime. Cachaca is Brazil’s most common distilled alcoholic beverage. A close second would be rum, which is made similarly to Cachaca.

The drink is made by smashing fruit (lime) and sugar together and then adding Cachaca liquor. Although the stories of it’s history are plenty, it seems its first appearance came in around 1918 in Sao Paulo. At the time it was a drink given to Spanish Flu patience, much like we here in Wisconsin due with Brandy and honey. At the time it was made with lime, garlic and honey. Today it is the national cocktail of Brazil and is starting to make it’s way into the caribbean and beyond.

How to make it:

½ Lime (quartered)

2 ½ fluid ounces of Cachaca

1 teaspoon white sugar

1 cup ice cubes

You can buy cachaca online with a price range of about $20-$70

One thing travel opens you up to is other cultures. Drinking has been part of people’s lives for thousands of years. Learning the importance that different forms of alcoholic drinks play into a people’s culture is similar to how food plays into a culture.
